In our world, you learn service above self. As I reflect back on the impact of our great Fraternity, I'm encouraged by the progress we've made just in this past year. And so, with federal higher education and civil rights legislation, the percentage of Americans 25 or older who had earned a bachelors degree increased from 9.8 to 32.5 percent between 1966, when we were founded, and 2015. I often quote Aristotle: Excellence is never an accident. Lets commemorate and celebrate those that came before us, while preparing and leading for the generations yet to come. Founders Day provides us the opportunity to reflect briefly on our university's history, to highlight important recent accomplishments, and to describe some of our vision for its future. Over the past fifty years, as our nation has grown its higher education enterprise, many more Americans went to college and earned bachelors degrees, access to our postsecondary institutions was widened to people of all groups, and the federal government expanded its investments in university research. Thousands of Fraters have engaged with the Fraternity for Life in new ways. In order to fortify our existence and build a championship culture, we need to control our destiny through bold initiatives and progressive actions. We would urge, therefore, as a fraternity dealing with up-to-date problems, that we should never forget the principles of true fraternalism as involved in the mutual helpfulness and the common ambition that are necessary in carrying this out. All of which are components of a championship culture. Change, both significant and vital, will require concerted efforts and meaningful plans for implementation. And the case for putting that campus in the Baltimore region was growing as well. The Grand Council, which typically convenes three or four times a year, met more frequently. In my tenure on the Grand Council, this has happened frequently. Budget and Endowment This is what they said: First, we remember the bond of sympathy and cooperation which made it possible for us to organize. o We have become a highly residential campus, with new and renovated residence halls and the Apartment Community Center (2013). The State of Maryland and other sources have generously provided almost three-quarters of a billion dollars in developing and building state-of-the-art facilities for instruction, research, and student life for the 20-year period from 2000 to 2020. Research, Scholarship, and Creative Achievement His doctoral student and postdoctoral fellow, Victoria DSouza, was granted tenure as full professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, Harvard University. For the first time in a generation since 1992, our chapters and colonies initiated more than 4,000 new men. I urge you to reengage with the Fraternity, to find new and creative ways to support Tau Kappa Epsilon with your time, talent, and treasure. It is a good way to recognize ones effort. As I travel TKE Nation, I consistently see the positive impact of our chapters, our alumni, our headquarters staff and our Foundation. We can and we must do better. As a collegiate Frater serving as an officer, we learn a sense of duty to our chapter and personal responsibility. This is my first Founders Day on campus, as it may be for many of you, and Im delighted we can meet together in person. In the age of digital media, nothing is forgotten and no fraternity is immune from these societal pressures. Staff had literally been sweeping floors and assembling desks the night before students arrived. Today I have been endowed with the responsibility of speaking on foundation day. It has been said and believed since long that for any great work to be done, it is important to have the right foundation. It actually forms the platform on which the future stands. This exactly stands true for Foundation Day of school. While our new donor count is growing, we embrace that there are scores of members who can ensure we reach our potential through investing in the greatest Fraternity on the planet. Yet the expense of membership should be kept sufficiently within the means of the average man that he may not be denied the prestige of belonging to a great national fraternity because of his limited means, nor Tau Kappa Epsilon deprived of the splendid assets that members of strong character, sterling worth and high scholastic standing will become to our fraternity, however they may be in material wealth. Our legacy of fundraising is nearly as lengthy as our existence. We continue to build an entrepreneurial climate for economic development. Our service and outreach efforts have benefitted numerous communities in desperate need of help. The increase for African Americans over this period was from 3.8 to 22.5 percent. This is a moment that allows us to consider what our aspirations have been over the years; reflect on 50 years of growth, grit and greatness; celebrate all that we have achieved together; and aspire yet again as success is never final. We will work to become one of the best research universities of our size in the world, and we are determined that our dream will not be deferred.. o This spring, Michael Summers, Robert E. Meyerhoff Chair for Excellence in Research and Mentoring, University Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and Howard Hughes Investigator, was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. We are not yet done. Frater Lester H. Martin, the first Grand Prytanis, was once quoted saying that our Founders set out to create an organization for the development of men to enable them to cope with the world when their school days were over and when they would be forced against the stern realities of life.. In a real sense, you and I are the legacy of goodwill and sacrifice on the part of the founders of Tau Kappa Epsilon. Although we have experienced significant growth since 1944, the global pandemic has upended higher education on Americas college campuses and Tau Kappa Epsilon is once again facing an existential threat. Fraters, grit and determination have been the cornerstones of TKE successes throughout our history. We had just $4 million in research in the late 1970s and $22 million at the end of the 1980s. Unsurprisingly, many Fraters immediately heeded the call to help TKE confront the Covid-19 headwinds and advance the cause of social justice that rang out across America. Be selectiverealizing that it would not be realistic to try to be all things, excellently, to all people, but that it could grow selectively to be excellent in key areas Many have lost a loved one to Covid-19. o Global dimensions are hallmarks of many other departments and programs, ranging from economics to philosophy to visual arts to engineering. We now have 15 major research centers on campus that report to either the provost or the vice president for research, and another 10 established by our colleges and departments. o We have partnerships with generous philanthropists and such foundations as Gates, HHMI, Sloan, and Mellon that have made a critical contribution to our efforts to improve student success. These challenges focus our work on carbon sequestration, improved solar energy, access to clean water, modernizing urban infrastructure, reverse engineering the brain, preventing nuclear terror, and the development of advanced personal learning. As we move forward we are looking in the mirror, asking questions: What are our challenges? o Can we imagine student apartments, along with a coffeehouse, a convenience store, a dry cleaners, or other desirable commercial services, to serve the campus of the future well?
